UiT The Arctic University of Norway has established «The Arctic MSCA-IF program» to select excellent young researchers planning to submit applications for a Marie Skƚodowska Curie individual fellowship (MSCA-IF) in order to pursue a research career (uit.no/afu/arcticmsca). We invite applications from promising young researchers within the field of Marine Geology. The selected candidate will write a proposal for a 24-month MSCA-IF at UiT together with Prof. Jan Sverre Laberg. This is an opportunity to accelerate your research career while living in the urban research city of Tromsø, uniquely located at the top of the world surrounded by some of Europe’s last pristine wild nature.
This call is one of 36 from pre-selected supervisors at UiT The Arctic University of Norway through the “Arctic MSCA-IF program” (uit.no/afu/arcticmsca/supervisors). Successful postdoc candidates will be invited to Tromsø (travel and accommodation expenses covered) for a two-day MSCA-IF symposium on May 3-4 2017. At this event, the candidates will present their past research achievements, discuss future plans with their potential supervisor and learn how to write a successful MSCA-IF application. Together with the supervisor, the selected candidates will start developing their MSCA-IF application towards the MSCA-IF deadline of September 14th 2017.

Modelling the isostatic response from glacial erosion of an Arctic continental shelf
High-latitude continental margins have developed from the repeated growth of grounded ice sheets onto the shelf. For the Arctic Barents Sea continental margin, such ice sheets repeatedly covered and shaped the continental shelf over the last 2.7 million years. Large volumes of sediments eroded from the shelf and surrounding land areas (sediment unloading) was transferred by the ice sheet to the adjacent continental slope (sediment loading). Estimates of up to 1000 m of glacial erosion of the shelf areas are based on a volumetric mass balance approach, quantifying the erosional products and considering their likely source areas. However, this approach do not account for the combined isostatic response resulting from sediment and ice loading and unloading. Therefore, the aim of this project is to develop and solve a “state-of-the-art” model to study the response of the crust to this loading and unloading. Important research questions are:
- What is the optimal geodynamical model for thermal and elastic spatial-temporal crustal responses to intermittent sediment and ice loading under realistic conditions?
- What was the rate of subsidence of the outer margin caused by the sediment loading?
- How did the inner part of the Barents Sea margin respond to the sediment loading?
- What was the additional effect of ice sheet loading and unloading for the pattern and rate of the isostatic response?

The applicant must be an «Experienced Researcher»; he/she shall, by the time of the deadline (September 14th 2017), be in possession of a doctoral degree or have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience. The ER can be of any nationality and shall not have spent more than 12 months in Norway in the 3 years immediately prior to September 14th 2017.
